TRANSGENDER BREAST SURGERY
Female to Male Transgender Mastectomy (“FTM Top Surgery”)
Chest wall contouring is an important surgical step in the process of female-to-male gender-confirmation. Surgical aesthetic contouring of the chest is performed in order to create the characteristics of a male chest and facilitate transition to the male role. Goals of surgery include removal of breast tissue, removal of excess skin, reduction of the nipple and areola size, and repositioning of the nipple areola complex. Depending on the size of the breasts, various techniques can be used to achieve these goals.
Surgical options include circumareolar incision with reduction of breast tissue and nipple areola complex, wise pattern breast reduction with inverted T scar, and transverse inframammary crease scar with free nipple grafts. Liposuction is often used, as well, to aid in chest contouring.
Male to Female Breast Augmentation
Chest wall contouring is an important surgical step in the process of male-to-female gender-confirmation. Surgical aesthetic contouring of the chest is performed in order to create the characteristics of a female chest and facilitate transition to the femalerole. Goals of surgery include enhancement of the breast mound with a natural appearing breast.
Surgery is typically performed with silicone or saline breast implants in order to increase the volume of the breast. At times nipple areola complex repositioning is required. Autolgous fat-transfer is another adjunct for chest wall and breast enhancement in male-to-female gender confirmation.
